When generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude burst onto the educational scene, universities quickly responded by deploying institutional AI detectors like Blackboard’s SafeAssign and Turnitin. While academic integrity is crucial, this rapid shift created a new, unintended problem: extreme student anxiety over false positives.

We heard countless stories of students who spent weeks researching and writing original essays, only to have their authentic work flagged as “AI-generated” due to a slightly robotic writing style, the use of standard academic phrasing, or simply because the detection algorithms aren’t perfect.

Blackboard AI Detector was born out of a desire to level the playing field. We are an independent group of EdTech developers, former teaching assistants, and data scientists who believe that students should have the right to test their work against these algorithms before they hit the final submit button.
